Running a little bit late
Sep 22nd
So we should have been on the road to Jozie a few hours ago and this is where we are:

We’re half way through spraying the car and still have to pack everything up; the trailer we hired uncovered a problem with our tow-hitch wiring and so we’ll have to sort that out before we can go anywhere; and we still have to finish the rear wing.
So don’t be surprised if you don’t see us at Diepkloof first thing in the morning, we’re still coming. We’re hoping to be on the road soon as and can’t wait to do so so the boys can get some sleep.
We rolled the car out the garage for the first time this morning and it’s looking freaking AWESOME!!
I for one cannot wait to see it sprayed. We’re still going to have to do some wheel alignment when we get there tomorrow, but that’s not going to be a massive job.
We’ll see you at the races! And tweet you from the road
PS: Who heard us on Goodhope FM last night?
Neglect
Sep 14th
We’re feeling the time shortage quite a bit with many late nights and even more Red Bulls. As a result our reports have slipped a little so here’s a little peak at a wheel pretty much hung although since then we have solved the problem that caused that horrible positive camber.
The Wheels are all sorted so we’re ready to start hanging the rears. We hoped to have the rears this weekend past but a technical hiccup meant they weren’t available which did put us behind a little. Otherwise, its going well.
A Couple Pictures
Sep 10th
A photo update on last nights progress.
Dashboard in place with a yet to be cut to size steering column.
Look from the front, the foam bonnet pieces have a couple layers for glass fibre to hold the shape. Next the foam will be hollowed out and the remaining glass shell will be stuck in place.
On the other end of the steering column with the bonnet removed. Showing the reinforced steering rack channel, ready to have the rack bolted into place. Above it are the suspension mount points with the shocks that are yet to be attached.
Finally a stand back shot showing how its taking shape. A little carbon on the inside and its ready to have the suspension hung. Aim is to have some wheels on before next week.
AAAAAAAAH
Sep 8th
Just pulled the final a-arm out of the mould and it was a near perfect one. Got a load of strength onto the subframe, managed to remove the studs that are too short from the front hubs and I think we finalized our brakes so all in all a successful night. Even laid up some carbon flat paneling to make up some dash brackets and possibly the brakes box. Still on track to be rolling this week.
AAAAAAAH!!!
We were told to use these things, no instructions though, this seemed to work.
Leg loops went in the wrong direction. Looked uncomfortable with the soft foam offering little in the way of protection.
Aaaaand there we go, sorted.
The Crunch
Sep 7th
Two weeks and some change to go till we have to be on the road to Soweto, finished cart in tow. Two weeks of hard graft it seems. We made some good progress over the weekend, pulling a number of a-arms out of the mould and getting through to Zane at Z2Z bikes in Somerset West to fetch a very pretty set of wheels.
Tonight we got some more carbon on the subframe, got the windshield carboned up and got the second last a-arm into the mould after the mould got some repair work. More importantly we took stock of what is still outstanding and set some goals for the days ahead. The most important was to have the car unsupported on it’s wheels, rolling by the end of the coming weekend. The goal didn’t include the brakes but I think they should be working by then too. Certainly not out of reach and barring major issues this should leave us a week for tweaks and decorations. Getting some colour onto the car and working on some of the style points we have always had in mind.
Tuesday Night
Sep 1st
We were suppliesed by a Red Bull visit last night for our build session but Craig was held up at work and I was feeling rather poorly so we didn’t get much done in the way of building. We did at least get a couple in car pictures with the new, over the shoulder structural supports.
What can I say, it is very tight. With the supports that wont be very structurally sound until they get their carbon reinforcement getting in and out was an epic contortion exercise but I’m very chuffed with the results. The last minute change to glue the foam plugs to the top of instead of the front of the rear supports got them exactly in the right place. This makes them support the side of the helmet nicely and has a very nice F1 look.
Love this picture, shows the look we were going for. Really need to spend some time trying to decide how and where to put the carbon but thats a problem for Thursday’s build, I have a bank card now so I’ll at least be able to get some supplies for then. Equally stoked with the final dashboard, the shape looks really good and leaves some good leg access which is much needed with the new shoulder pieces. We also moulded a bearing holder so thats about ready to go into the car. I think some yellow paint is in order so it can get a small amount of signage sprayed on and then get a nice clear coat to really make the carbon pop. I’ll post some pictures then, perhaps a couple of the a-arms which as Lisa mentioned, look awesome.
Today was supposed to be “rolling” day but I don’t think we’re in a bad place. My uncle Richard gave me some awesome info thats going to simplify one of the speed bumps in the build hugely. Watch this space.
Getting started on the A-arms
Aug 29th
We started moulding A-arms today. One of eight done and the second one is busy setting in the mould. As happens with most plans, ours changed slighty after we ran the mould for the first time. The resulting A-arm is still usable, but we’re expecting the other 7 will be better.
Here’s a pic of the master (Justin) at work. His carbon laying skills come from years of making his own fairings and tanks for his race bikes.

SecurityBunny was on constant patrol, and only had to be stopped once from trying to eat our work.
Here’s the first a-arm in all its carbon glory
Will let you know how the second one comes out
Chow for now
Sinister moves afoot.

Earlier in the week the house at the build premises was broken in to and despite MiniBunny’s valiant attempts to fight them off, the thief/thieves made off with amongst other things a Macbook. Somebody looking for secret schematics and build details on the cart or a strange random coincidence? Perhaps time will tell but thankfully the information was safe on our Red Bull flash disk which was in a safe place. For now security will be stepped up but if anyone knows of any security companies that might be able to loan us a second rabbit for the duration of the build, MiniBunny really needs someone to have his back.
Welcome
Aug 25th
Welcome to version 2 of our site. The version that should have come out when we first heard we were accepted, rather late then never we’ll keep a log of progress from this point on. I’ll get the whole team to write about their own experiences on the build and post any of their own media. Sure there will be build photos for now, some video will come when the car is rolling. Take a look around, meet the team. The microblogging will also carry on via Twitter so don’t miss that.
